The AGI and The Black Philanthropy Fund (an organization of African Americans in Boston) formally launched The Basics movement in Boston in September of 2016 to help prepare children from all backgrounds and across whole neighborhoods to thrive, starting at birth.
The word spread quickly. By December, teams from 11 cities convened in Boston to learn about The Principles, the tools, and the approach. Rather than wait years for Boston to refine the approach, attendees agreed, “We'll figure it out together.” The Basics Learning Network (BLN) was thereby born. It operates under the leadership of The Basics, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization under the fiscal sponsorship of Third Sector New England (TSNE).
Today, coalitions across dozens of BLN cities, towns, and counties in the US, Brazil, and Australia are engaging their communities, participating in BLN research, and regularly convening to learn, innovate, and share best practices.
The Basics Virginia History
Thrive Birth to Five, formerly Smart Beginnings of Greater Richmond became the backbone of The Basics Virginia in July of 2023. We collaborate to build our region’s early childhood system and are a trusted steward of early childhood resources for families, providers and the ecosystem supporting them so that all children in our region will thrive and race, place, and income will no longer determine success in school.
Chesterfield County Public Schools was instrumental in bringing The Basics to the greater Richmond area from Boston where it originated. In 2018, a steering committee was formed with representatives from Chesterfield County, Children’s Museum of Richmond, VPM, Family Lifeline, NDP Agency, Reach Out and Read VA, VCU Health, First Connections and Thrive Birth to Five to bring together expertise and leverage resources to expand the program and create opportunities for engagement across the Greater Richmond region.
In response to continued interest and growth RVA Basics has now become The Basics Virginia. We are connected statewide with other backbones and are working hard to bring in more believers, partners, and contributors within the footprint we serve. Come join our movement!
